The book from PA to LA is a must have. It will inspire any reader to never quit and always give everything you have. After reading this remarkable story, I automatically got excited about life and it's journey. If you don't own from PA to LA, you are MISSING OUT! -Jimmy Buchman
What a wonderful human story. Easy read and surprisingly inspirational. Great three hours and uplifting experience. It is still highly relevant.
Inspiration sometimes comes from unlikely sources. From PA to LA provides that and much more! As a mother and a sports fan I found that this book included an insider's look at my beloved USC Trojan football team, as I expected, what was unexpected was how I was challenged and inspired by Yogi Roth's tale of dreaming, embracing adversity,& working hard to achieve goals. This book is Yogi's autobiography with many more chapters left unwritten since at the time of publication the author was only 27 years old! He takes the reader along on his trips down memory lane and around the world. He shows you his heart of a competitor and adventurer. So grab your copy of From PA to LA and get ready for the unexpected!
A reference to this book in the Pitt alumni magazine prompted me to purchase it. Yogi Roth grew up outside of Scranton, PA and played football at the University of Pittsburgh. He subsequently got a job on the coaching staff at USC during the Pete Carroll era.
You can think of this book as covering three areas 1. High school and college, 2. Travel abroad, 3. Living and coaching in SoCal. The sections are not at all similar in form and substance.
The Pennsylvania story is well written and covers his family (including two generations back) and sports. It gives good insight into what life is like in eastern PA, and what his playing career entailed at Pitt. If the entire book had been a slightly expanded version of all that, I would rate it at least a "4".
His international travel was interesting, and deserved a little more discussion. Photos of the places he described would have also added to the reader's interest. It clearly wasn't intended to be a big part of the book, though it was the basis for some of the life principles Roth came to adopt.
The USC chapters, however, were extremely disappointing. They are basically a collection of emails he sent to his brother, as seasons progressed over the course of his time on that staff. Topics are covered very superficially and there is countless repeating of comments and thoughts. He raves about politicians and others based on their ability to make impressive speeches or be sociable. There may or may not be real substance to these people, but he's enamored with them and that's that. Sadly, for the reader, though the author has an insider's perspective on games, planning and reactions of key coaches and players in a highly visible football program, he shares relatively little. He could have provided so much more in terms of insight and education on the USC team and staff. Sports writers outside the program have done much better.
Great and easy read! Inspirational all athletes should have to read this book about life and adversity it brings you.
This is a great book. I would highly recommend it as a Christmas gift for any sports fan on your list. What a wonderful story.
Read this great story about yogi, about football, and about a life energetically lived to its fullest potential each day.
